My hometown of Montreal has an abundance of Lebanese and middle eastern restaurants. Any type of restaurant for that matter. One of the things I definitely miss about Montreal is the food! When I moved to Savannah, I was browsing Yelp, compiling my hit list and came across Al Salaam Deli (ASD) and bookmarked it because It seemed to be one of the very few in its category. It was my usual, weekly date with my Brunch Squad and I suggested ASD.

It is located in a neighborhood and from the outside, you will see a red awning, with the windows dressed in simple signs that say "Gyro", "Hummus" and "Deli" and the restaurant name. It almost looks like an old school convenience store. What lies behind those doors is such a charming little place. The kind that makes my heart sing and makes me so happy to have found it!

    Parking: Street parking.

What I ate/drank -  I shared the following with my Little One:
Babaganoush - Oh my! It was so smooth and tasty. It is a generous portion, served in a clear, plastic to-go container and the way they place it in there is just so pretty (refer to pic)! There is a dollop of chili (?) in the center, drizzled with olive oil that collects in the pockets of the babaganoush that form in the pattern. Served with sections of pita bread, this was a great starter to our meal.

Chicken Gyro Combo - Combo just means with fries. The Gyro contained generous pieces of scrumptious, marinated cubes of chicken, with shredded iceberg lettuce and a garlic sauce. It was so big, the two ends of the pita barely touched. It comes wrapped in foil to help you keep it together. The fries were the generic, average-sized fries, but were cooked nice and crisp with the right balance of cooked potato in the inside.

Baklava - How could I resist? They sit right by the cash when ordering. Although, probably over the top, it completed the meal and experience. It was flaky, nutty, sweet, all the elements that a baklava should have. It was delicious!

Vibe - Just a warning. It's small. If you have personal space issues, best you take it to go. When you walk in, you will probably take about a total of 10 steps inside. To the left is the open kitchen with the cash separating it from the dining area. The place has been packed tightly with supplies and things that all have its place. In front of you are shelves stocked with Middle Eastern products. To the right is the dining area and I mean, a total of 4 tables. Whole issues of National Geographic magazines are nailed to the wall, arranged neatly and serve as wallpaper. There are 2 benches lining the walls with velvet seat cushions in burgundy and contrasting yellow pillow cushions.

Kid-Friendly - They don't have a Kids menu, but I shared all of the above items with my Little One.

Service - The service is what makes this place extra special. The owners were just so nice and so welcoming. It really is like walking into a neighbor's house. We came in just before the lunch rush and placed our order at the cash. They told us to have a seat and called us when the order was ready. At the end, when I was paying for my order, I asked if they had coffee to purchase and explained that I always needed fuel for the drive back due to the usual food coma. He told me they didn't have any, but offered the coffee they normally make for themselves and even went out of his way to get a to-go cup and lid. He even made my coffee with milk and sugar and made sure I liked it and he didn't even charge me for it after I insisted. He also made sure our leftover food was packed well for the road. They were both so thoughtful and sincere.

Lucky people who live right by ASD! I would be making weekly visits if I were them, which I'm sure they probably do. Scrumptious food and awesome owners, the best combo!

Al Salaam Deli offers some tasty Middle Eastern food, although a bit pricey. I think my experience here could have been better, but overall not bad.

Al Salaam Deli is located in a neighborhood and has no private parking. There is street parking available and we were able to park right in front of the restaurant. It is very much a hole-in-the-wall place and the space is very tiny. There are 4 little tables and a side bar by the window with some chairs for seating. I wouldn't recommend dining in here as the space is pretty tight - it's best to get the food to-go.

When my family and I walked in it was HOT. It's gross but we were dripping sweat. There wasn't much relief from the blazing heat outside. We asked the owner if he was able to turn on the fan for us, and luckily it helped a bit. It was still pretty hot inside though.

Their menu consists of pita wraps/gyros, sandwiches (cheeseburgers and Philly cheesesteak), and delight platters. The delight platters come with baba ghanoush, hummus, salad (tomato, lettuce, cucumber), pita bread, olives, and their special sauce. The pita wraps/gyros and sandwiches are at a good price from $6.50-$9.50 but the delight platters are on the pricier end with most being $13.99-$15.99. I'm guessing these items are pricey because Middle Eastern food is hard to find here in Savannah.

We really wanted to try their kabob delight platter but they told us they were all out. That was really disappointing. I wish they had more kabob/minced meat options here. We asked for a cheeseburger with fries for the kids and they told us they were out of that too...alright then.

Here's what we ended up getting:

    -Chicken Gyro combo with fries
    -Chicken Curry Delight Platter
    -Chicken Tikka Delight Platter
-Al Salaam Deluxe Platter (comes with your choice of chicken or lamb gyro meat and falafel)
    -sides of rice

My brothers enjoyed the chicken gyro and ate it all up. They said it was good. Fries were pretty standard.

I decided to go for the Chicken Curry Delight Platter. I know that's probably not the best dish to get from a Middle Eastern joint but the pictures looked good and I was craving something kind of saucy, okay?

The chicken curry consisted of chopped chicken lightly covered in tahini sauce and some kind of hot chili sauce. They can make it as spicy as you like. To be honest I kind of wish it was more saucy. The texture and taste of the chicken itself was fine, maybe a little bland. The tahini and hot sauce on top really helped add to the flavor. The hummus is alright.

Their baba ghanoush is DELICIOUS. Probably some of the best baba ghanoush I've had. I highly recommend it. The delight platter also comes with pita bread so you can dip into the hummus and baba ghanoush. The salad consisted of tomato, lettuce, and cucumber. I'm not sure why their menu lists "olives" as it's own separate thing - there were only two small olives in there. I kind of wish they put more olives in there. Their special sauce is tzatziki sauce I believe, although it really tastes more like ranch if anything. I really wish the delight platter came with rice but it doesn't. We ordered rice on the side and it was pretty good. Rice is flavorful.

Portion-wise though I have to say the quantity is less than what I was expecting for $14-$15. There wasn't a whole lot of chicken in there.

My parents both enjoyed their chicken tikka platter and deluxe platter. They said the flavors were good but they agreed the quantity was low for the price you pay. Not as much meat in the platter for the price. I've eaten at places that offer more food for a cheaper price, but I guess this pricing is to be expected in Savannah. The deluxe platter comes with three small pieces of falafel. I tried some of the falafel and I gotta say, it was delicious. Their falafel is light and has a great texture and flavor. It's not dense like some falafel I've tried in the past.

The cook was very nice and was patient with us. Owner was nice too but a bit distracted. But this isn't exactly a restaurant so I can't complain.

There was only one holder for napkins at one of the tables. There weren't a lot of napkins in there and so we had to ask for more napkins.

There are some items and food ingredients in the store that they sell as well.

It's a little tight to get to the bathroom because it's in the corner of the store in a small hallway.

Overall the food here is decent. Is it the best Middle Eastern food I've ever had at a takeout place? No, but the food is still good and the flavors are there. I just wish the portions warranted the pricing, we paid almost $100 for 5 people which includes the entrees, $1-$2 sodas, and 3 sides of rice. I don't see any reason for it to cost that much when that's about the same price we'd pay at a high end restaurant like Persepolis. It's still a good option if you want Middle Eastern Food in Savannah, maybe I'll try more of the menu - but I'm not in a hurry to come back.

Great place to eat. It's away from downtown so it off the beaten path. We ate in and they treated us so well. Definitely going back

Great Lamb Gyro filled with plenty of lamb, onions, lettuce and their sauce.  It was the appropriate amount of messy!  I was adventurous and also ordered a side of Falafel as I've never had it before. Their Falafel is ground chickpeas with spices, rolled bite size and fried.  I loved the cumin flavor, crunchy outside and moist flavorful inside.
Small, quaint, with counter service at this mid eastern restaurant.  While waiting you can entertain yourself with the many National Geographic magazines that decorate their walls.  I hear their hummus is fantastic and can't wait to try on my next visit.
